The Policy of Uzbekistan in the Field of Solid Waste Recycling
On October 23-24, 2024, the Regional Forum "Green Economy – 2024" and the Bishkek Investment Forum – 2024 took place in Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan), where Anton Kostiuchenko, a chief specialist from the Project Office for the Promotion and Implementation of Green Economy at the Graduate School of Business and Entrepreneurship, presented a report on "The Policy of Uzbekistan in the Field of Solid Waste Recycling".
The forums aimed to establish partnerships between government bodies and the business sector of Central Asian countries for the development of a green economy and to formulate joint initiatives. In his report, Kostiuchenko focused on the Strategy for Solid Waste Management in Uzbekistan for the period until 2028, adopted in 2019.
The report covered key aspects of the strategy, including:
- Uzbekistan is developing new regulatory legal acts to increase responsibility for waste disposal and is implementing mechanisms to optimize tariffs for sanitation services.
- Plans include the establishment of containers for separate waste collection and the construction of waste processing plants, which will enhance recycling and disposal.
- By 2028, it is planned to achieve a 60% recycling rate for solid waste and to reduce waste burial by 60%.
- Emphasis on environmental education and raising public awareness about the importance of separate waste collection and recycling.
Kostiuchenko emphasized that the establishment of a new Agency for Waste Management and Circular Economy Development will be a significant step toward improving waste management efficiency and enhancing the environmental situation in the country.
